Asian Invasion

Growing up I never had an Asian American role model to look up to, even when I asked people if they could name 5 Asian male celebrities it was difficult besides naming Jet Li and Jackie Chan. When I first started PeterFever, I wanted to create a site to help Asian men into the media spotlight and break stereotypes. It’s pretty incredible to see how far Asian celebrities have come. There are a few famous Asian women in the industry, like Kelly Hu, Jamie Chung, and Lucy Liu, but it’s nice to start seeing Asian men get a start in entertainment.

Psy isn’t a stranger to international success, with his hit “Gangnam Style”. Now he’s back with his new single “Gentleman.” It’s just as catchy as “Gangnam Style” and the video is hilarious. Hopefully he’ll continue to break records and show the world how cool Asians can be. What do you guys think about the video?

My assistant Alex is also told me he was in a music video for Leslie Deep’s “Sweet Sauce.” Leslie is an up and coming artist from San Francisco trying to break his own ground in the music industry. It’s good to see other Asians having dreams of being in the American entertainment business.

Another Asian superstar who’s going to be breaking America soon is Godfrey Gao. For those of who are not familiar with Godfrey, he’s a Taiwanese model who landed a deal as the first Asian face of Louis Vuitton. Now he’ll be appearing in the new American franchise adaptation of the book , The Mortal Instruments, as Magnus Bane. What’s even better, his character in the film flaunts his gay sexuality, that will be interesting to see on the big screen.

I can’t wait to see what is going to happen for Asian American men in entertainment in the next few years! It’s only the beginning. I hope more Asian American’s start to realize they can be in the business as well and pursue their dreams and break these stereotypes that hold our community back.

  1. peter you can see the direction of Indonesia’s where the music or the like popping up and I had come in it would be very difficult to fight against the current but there…

  2. The lack of Asians in Western media is why I stick to pop culture from Asia. THANK GOD for the Internet or else I’d never found out about K-pop and Japanese gay porn.

  3. I was watching those clips and I actually enjoyed the fun and light natured environments that Psy had implemented in his MV; the other ones were slightly ‘in your face’ with their lyrics and their props. I didn’t enjoy the experience unfortunately.

Speaking of (gay) Asians in mainstream media, have a look at this clip!

  4. I always thought it weird that people seem to forget Jason Scott Lee, I mean didn’t he change a lot of things? And what was about Dustin Ngyuen? Or Mako? I always wondered why no one seems to know them.

But either way. I didn’t like Psy’s video as much as Gangnam Style. It’s not bad but it also has no appeal to me. I am actually 100% neutral towards it.

And Godfrey Gao… I hate to break it to you Peter but you actually got things wrong:
Magnus Bane is not a villain; he is a supporting character in the film. Basically he is a centuries year old warlock, in the film universe that means that he is the offspring of a human and demon. Also his role in the book on which the film is based Magnus doesn’t have a big role and apart from him eyeing the character of Alec, played by Kevin Zegers in the books, there is only his eccentric clothes revealing him as “gay.” But when a book is made into a film things get changed, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse, so we will have to see. They already changed the role of Raphael from a teenage looking “latino” vampire by casting German/Austrian actor Elyas M’Barek as “vampire lieutenant”. Thereby making the character looking older and tougher. Also Gao with his 28 years is looking a lot older than book Magnus who was described as looking like 19 and actually being of mixed Dutch Indonesian ancestry. So we will have to see what role he will actually play in the movie. I don’t like it when roles get so much exposure and in the end the characters barely do anything.

I personally prefer Godfrey Gao’s look over that of the book Magnus. In the books Magnus is described as very tall and very skinny. And one character described him as a gay Sonic the Hedgehog and actually it fits. He dresses like a stereotypical gay man, technically he is bisexual, and I personally think the author didn’t do a good job with him. She might have meant well but not only does he dress like a gay stereotype, she lets him blurt out stuff to total strangers, he constantly does what is asked of him and I think he is more the stereotype of the mysterious Asian than anything else. He is not really a well developed character and also badly written. The author gave several conflicting numbers for his age, but at the very least he is 300 years old and had several relationships across sexes and species (vampires, warlocks, faeries etc.) but he didn’t strike me as a man of that age and experience. He often acted like a guy barely out of puberty than someone who has actually lived. He is very much a deus ex machina in my eyes. Hopefully the film will do better with the character than the books do.

  5. Hey Peter just a heads up. Godfrey Gao isn’t a villain in that movie or the books, he is actually a good guy who dates one of the main characters.
