Today I took the bullet train to Hiroshima and then a ferry over to the historic island of Miyajima. Miyajima is a designated world heritage site and I really wanted to see the famous O-torii Gate that stands guard in the ocean outside Itsukushima shrine. The gate is huge; its main pillars are built out of entire camphor trees. The gate weighs 60 tons – I can’t even bench it. The gate has been rebuilt 8 times over hundreds of years. Even though this is the 8th one, it was actually built a very long time ago, back in 1875 during Japan’s Heian period. If you go to Japan, this is one destination you have to see.
