Getting Advice from Joe

My buddy Joe, who lives in New York City, is close friend that I can always rely on for advice. Today I called him because I’ve been moody lately with people and can’t figure out why. I just snap at people, which is highly unusual because I’m normally even tempered.

Joe volunteers at AA support groups from time to time, because he wants to give back to the people who helped him 20 years ago. When he recently went to a meeting, he learned about a new acronym “HALT” (Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired). He said, “Remember HALT, whenever you don’t feel like yourself or people are asking you if something is wrong. It normally means that you are either hungry, angry, lonely, tired, or a combination of those.”

It made sense. I’ve been traveling a lot lately, staying out late, not eating on my regular schedule and definitely not getting enough sleep. So now that I know what’s wrong, I need to reschedule my days so I put myself first and make sure I eat on a regular schedule and get at least 8 hours sleep each night.

Thanks Joe, I always know I can count on you for great advice. And if you guys feel out of control, remember to HALT and help center yourself again.

  1. Peter —- leave your big ego at home too! Starting treating others as equals —- we don’t always have to see you without a shirt. Surely their is more to YOU can than just your body ???

    Dr. Daniel…

    • WTF are you talking about? Start treating people as equals? What an asshole comment, you don’t even know me and now you are judging me? Doctor? And I’m the one with the ego?

  2. That is some good advice. Recently I have been combining two or three of these HALT things. I need to step back and just calm down. Tell Joe I said thanks.
