Gay Marriage Rights!

Equality
Equality

Today is a historical day! The Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriages. I’m sure you guys have been hearing about it all over the news, but I just wanted to give you guys a summary of the ruling and what it means to us. Here are some key points:

1) same-sex marriage will begin towards the end of July

2) gay marriage does not apply statewide

3) for the 18,000 gay couples married in California of 2008, the government must treat legally same-sex couples the same as heterosexual couples in terms of benefits.

4) it takes 25 days from the ruling to be final, but it could be faster.

That’s a wrap!

  1. it’s a great step forward, so many people celebrating! I like that sincere love between two people is officially given due respect. A bitter-sweet joy, because your status and rights are still at the mercy of the most influential majority in your state?!! may the day come soon when the whole nation, and the whole world ‘holds these truths to be self-evident…’

  2. Thanks Peter for your blog. It is a great day for America! One correction, however, the SC action will allow same sex marriages throughout California, but not nationwide. It stays a state issue.
Ps I want to attend your wedding, please

  3. A bit of a mistake here: gay marriage will have to happen statewide within 25 days (or sooner) per the governor and Attorney General unless standing is granted for another appeal to limit the scope of the District Court’s jurisdiction in their ruling (which is not likely -- the California Supreme Court would have to weigh in again and they aren’t inclined to)… so, the Gov. and AG have been very clear the marriages will and MUST begin statewide in 25 days…
