My friend wrote me something he read in a blog the other day, “Whenever something doesn’t workout the way you thought it would, instead of thinking that something went wrong, see it as something that went unexpectedly well, but for reasons that are not yet apparent. With perfection, the universe unfolds.”
I have always believed every event in life, good and bad, has a meaning; finding that meaning and growing from it is our challenge. Some people choose to fight everything, but sometimes we need to accept things as they are and spend our energy on more meaningful endeavors. This reminds me of the Serenity Prayer by the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr:
God, grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.
You don’t have to be religious for this to have meaning. Sometimes it is hard to know when to fight and when to let go.
I have another friend who was really depressed; he wasn’t able to secure a job after being unemployed for 6 months. Then I heard from him recently, “[Peter] I agree with you, everything happens for a reason. I am a lawyer and I am working for a new firm. Can you guess what I will be doing? Unemployment Law. Can you believe it? The past 6 months was a process I had to go through to really understand what it means and feels to do this type of work.”
When bad events happen to me, I choose to take the path of least resistance. I guess you can say I’m like river flowing, enjoying the twists and turns ahead and avoiding unnecessary confrontation. As water, I could try fighting gravity’s pull, but for what purpose? I know that along the way, I will pickup experiences that I will take with me, enriching my life and those I meet along the way.
So here is my wish for you – Believe in yourself and see all the good that life has to offer.
The Serenity Prayer is misattributed to the German theologian, Reinhold Niebuhr, actually St. Francis of Assisi is the author of that prayer.
Having you make love to me would make me happy!. 🙂
You got the jing, you got the tao! 🙂 …thank You for sharing all the good You have to offer! …
that what I believe everyday
